How it works

From your tree program to one chart

  1. Export a GEDCOM file

In Ancestry, MyHeritage, Family Tree Maker or another program, export your tree as a .ged file. Our guides show where.

  2. Preview it free

Choose the file above. Pick a home person and Ancestors or Descendants, and every person in that view is laid out in one chart.

  3. Check the size

The preview says whether the chart fits a 24x36 inch poster at the 7pt minimum type size. Ordering a printed poster opens soon.

What you get

The whole tree, not a few generations

Every person in the view

No cap on generations. Descendants, spouses and ancestors are all drawn, with right-angle connectors.

Your file stays in your browser

It is read on your device. It is not uploaded and not stored; reload and it is gone.

Living people protected

People who may be living show by name only, and one switch hides them from the chart.

A plain answer on size

It tells you if the chart fits 24x36 inches at 7pt type, and never shrinks the type to squeeze it in.

FAQ

Questions

Is my family tree uploaded to your server?

No. The page reads your GEDCOM file inside your browser and draws the chart there. The file and the people in it are not sent to us and are not stored. Reload the page and they are gone.

Which programs can I use?

Any program or website that can export a GEDCOM (.ged) file. We have step-by-step guides for Ancestry, MyHeritage and Family Tree Maker, and a note on FamilySearch, on the guide pages linked below.

How many generations and people does it chart?

Every person reachable from the home person you pick in the view you pick, with no cap on generations. Whether that fits a 24x36 inch sheet at the 7pt minimum type size depends on the shape of the tree, and the preview tells you plainly. It never shrinks the type to make a large tree fit.

What is the difference between Ancestors and Descendants?

Ancestors draws the home person with their parents, grandparents and so on up the tree. Descendants draws the home person with their spouses, children and so on down. To see a whole family, choose its oldest person and Descendants.

What happens to living people?

People with no death recorded who were born in the last 100 years, or who have no dates at all, are treated as possibly living. They are shown by name only, with no dates, and one switch hides them from the chart entirely. The home person always stays on the chart as its starting point.

Can I order a printed poster?

Not yet. Ordering opens soon. The planned offer is a 24x36 inch printed poster for $49, shipped to your door (United States first). Nothing can be bought on this site today, and price and shipping area may change before ordering opens.

Can I save the chart as a picture or PDF?

Not yet. The preview is for viewing on screen.

Is Branchwall part of Ancestry, FamilySearch or MyHeritage?

Branchwall is an independent tool and is not affiliated with Ancestry, FamilySearch or MyHeritage. Those names are used only to say which GEDCOM files the preview can read.
